High-school volunteer, Josephine Wear, teaches a cooking class with the first graders. They made grilled cheese and ham sandwiches, with grilled apples and pears. Yummy! In addition to assembling the meal, the kids participated in a literacy activity that focused on writing and illustration. Jojo also talked about the importance of fresh ingredients and nutrition. Future recipes include smoothies, yogurt bowls, salad, salsa and guacamole.
Reminder! The last day of after-school for the first trimester is Friday, November 21. There is NO after-school from November 24 to December 2. We will return to after-school on Wednesday, December 2, with new classes!
Every Wednesday, after a long day of studying, our students at Bayside Elementary and Willow Creek Academy have been chowing down on the most delicious after-school snack of the week! The kids have been elated to be filling up on pesto pasta, grilled chicken, homeade macaroni & cheese, and more.

Audience members were WOWed by the Ballet Folklorico Netzahualcoyotl, directed by Netza Vidal. Four beautiful and inspiring young women performed traditional Mexican dances, with costume changes! Everyone's played a part in making the Mexican Altar. The mural was created by 4th and 5th graders in Breandain Langlois's visual arts class. There are Calaveras de Azúcar (Sugar Skulls), created by students in Ms. Kate's Visual Art class, and flowers and Model Magic offerings created on the day of the event, by all ages. We cheated, using pre-made Fondit and shaping the skulls overselves.

Our year has begun and we're just warming up. Students on the Bayside and Willow Creek campus are off to a great start, delving into their different art classes.
African Drumming & Dance with Mr. Ken Doumbia (Mon:grades K/1, Tues: grades 2/3, Wed: grades 4/5, K/1, Thurs & Fri: MLK grades 6/8)
In the West African dance & drum club, students experience the energetic and powerful musical and cultural traditions of West Africa using the djembe and jun-jun drums. Students can choose to either drum or dance--or both! Students learn the meaning of the rhythms and how they represent important values such as honoring our parents, our elders and celebrating our community. Students learn how we use dance and drum to express community harmony and unity. For the final performance, students perform vibrant dance movements with lively drum rhythms, in colorful African costumes.
Working with the Marin Theater Company, second graders practice moving as animals, while the rest try to guess which one! (Wed: grades 2/3, 4/5)
The primary goal of the Intro to Theater class is to engage the students in a creative process, empowering a sense of ownership towards their own artistic impulses and laying the groundwork for future participation in theatre and the arts. Students will learn the fundamentals of theater, touching on subjects like Basic Voice & Speech, Theatre Vocabulary , and Storytelling and Imagination. For the final project students will create and rehearse their own 5 minute play based on the selected text. Students perform their play on the final day of after-school, and/or in a special final session at MTC’s Lieberman Theatre along with MTC after-school classes from other schools!
Capoeira is a blend of martial arts, games, and dance originated in Brazil. In the Intro to Capoeira class, students will learn the basic movements of the afro-brazilian art of Capoeira, as well as the songs, music, and history associated with the art form. Capoeira was developed during the 16th C by African slaves forced to work on sugar plantations in Brazil, and it remains a pivotal part of afro-brazilian culture. Students will improve physical and mental fortitude, gain self confidence, and learn about their culture, in a safe and fun environment. In the final performance, students will perform a "Batizado," including a partner sequence and a "free game" of Capoeira, in order to receive their very first belt.
Class Description: Children will have the opportunity to link literacy with the visual arts. They will be able to develop their writing and thinking skills through exploring and discussing a different children’s book each week during literacy hour. The underlying themes from the book - Respect & Diversity, Community & Friendship and ‘I like me’, will be explored through the visual arts. Children will learn to work together through mural making, develop their own sense of imagination and creativity and will also gain a greater understanding of visual art techniques through a variety of visual arts projects.

Program Description The Twilight After School program is a free after school program at the Bayside Elementary/Willow Creek campus for grades k-5 and at Martin Luther King Middle School for grades 6-8. Every day, students receive a free snack, academic help, and participate in fun and enriching activities. All students in the Sausalito Marin City School district are welcome to sign-up.
Hours Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday the program operates from 3 p.m.– 6 p.m. Wednesdays the program will operate from 1:45 – 6 p.m. The program is CLOSED on all district scheduled school holidays, and will additionally be closed on the following days: Nov. 3, 4, 26; Dec. 1, 2, 19, Jan. 26, March 16,17, April 6, 7, June 11
Grades K-5 from Bayside and Willow Creek will participate in a literacy/academic hour, snack time, and be involved in arts and sports workshops. Activity selection will occur during the first week of school.
Grades 6-8 from Bayside and Willow Creek will participate in the literacy and academic hour at the Bayside/Willow Creek campus. They will then join the students from 4-6 pm at the Martin Luther King campus for snack and the additional programs. Grades 6-8 from Bayside and Willow Creek will return to the Bayside campus before 6 pm for dismissal. To allow your student to walk home from MLK ask for the release form. MLK students’ entire program will remain at MLK.

Youth in Arts has been providing arts education to students in the Bay Area since 1970. Through the Twilight program it is offering high-quality instruction in visual and performing arts, literacy and recreational sports to our students. Classes include Mexican Dance, Drawing & Painting, A Capella, African Dance & Drumming, and more!
