Student artwork on view in Sausalito Public Library

Student artwork from Ms. Kate's K-3 classes is currently on view in the Sausalito Public Library. In the children's section you will find visual art and "safe space" sculptures. The paintings and drawings are from Ms. Kate's "This is Me" unit, where students used painting and collage to create self-portraits and drawings that represent themselves, their likes, and dislikes.

The library is located at 420 Litho Street, Sausalito. For more information, including hours, please refer to the library's website.

Student artwork in school library

Students in Ms. Kate's Visual Art class created a mural of Marin County, which they worked on over several weeks during the fall semester of the after-school program. Over 60 students from grades K-5 collaborated on the mural, which reflects their community, the environment around them, and the landscape and people they interact with daily.

The mural is on display in the school library shared by Bayside Elementary and Willow Creek Academy. What do you think about the mural? Please leave us a comment.

Student's also created sculptures using tree branches, recycled materials, and craft items. They were asked to create a place of safety or a "safe space." Many of the students built fences and tree houses to represent their space.

Youth Festival at the MYC

Fifteen youth from the after-school program traveled to San Rafael on Dec. 5 to participate in the MYC's youth festival. With artwork and performances by youth from all over Marin County, a great time was had by all. We were proud to perform, got inspired, and even made some new friends.

Our dancers, drummers, basist, and flutist performed first. The students have been working on this piece for a few weeks during their weekly trips to the MYC on Wednesdays.

Students who have been working with Ken Doumbia performed some of their beats. Here you can see the audience in the background; it was a full house.

We were WOWed by the breakdancers! Photo by Andre

And we got to enjoy some really talented singers, rappers, and more. Thanks to all who made this a fun and special event.

Thank you to Jackson's Hardware

A HUGE shout-out to Jackson's Hardware in San Rafael for donating headlamps and umbrellas! Since daylight savings we've been using the headlamps every day and it's created a sense of safety among the younger groups. Luckily, the weather has been cooperating and we haven't even opened the umbrellas yet, but we're sure they'll be needed soon.

Jackson's was named one of the TOP SMALL WORKPLACES of 2008 by The Wall Street Journal and is a Bay Area Green Business.
